One Thing You Lack
Scripture
Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him. “There is still one thing you haven’t done,” he told him. “Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” — Mark 10:21 NLT
Devotional
Jesus loved the rich young ruler enough to tell him the truth.
The man had religion. He had morality. He had discipline. He had knowledge of the commandments. From the outside, he looked like he had everything in order. But Jesus saw the one thing that owned his heart.
For this man, it was possessions. For someone else, it may be control, approval, comfort, pride, bitterness, addiction, fear, or reputation. The issue is not always the thing itself. The issue is whether that thing has become greater than Jesus.
Jesus does not expose our idols to shame us. He reveals them because He loves us. He knows anything we refuse to surrender will eventually keep us from walking freely with Him.
The invitation is still simple and costly: “Come, follow Me.”
Reflection
What is the “one thing” that may be competing with Jesus in your heart?
Would you still follow Jesus if He asked you to lay it down?
Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal anything you have been protecting from surrender.
