Reverence, Not Terror

Scripture

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.” - Proverbs 9:10 ESV

Devotion

Dr. Tatum clarified that when Scripture speaks of “the fear of the Lord,” it does not mean living in terror of God. It means reverence, respect, worship, and obedience. To fear the Lord is to recognize His authority and respond with surrendered trust.

God is not trying to torment His people. He calls us into loving obedience. When we truly reverence Him, we desire to honor Him with our choices, our attitudes, and our actions. Wisdom begins when we say, “Lord, You are in control, and I want my life to please You.”

Reflection

Is your view of God shaped more by fear or by reverent love? What is one decision you can make today that honors Him?
