Hurts, Habits, and Hang‑Ups

Scripture:

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
– John 8:36 (ESV)

Devotion:

Pastor Darren talked about a word that’s been confronting him: “hang-ups.” Hurts, habits, and hang-ups can keep us from moving forward with God like a leg caught in barbed wire. You see where God wants to take you. You can even see the “other side of the fence.” But something keeps snagging you every time you try to cross.

He gave us the picture of getting literally hung on a fence because he wouldn’t use the gate. He could see the other side, but his pants (and sometimes his skin) got caught halfway over. That’s how many of us live spiritually—stuck, “straddling the fence.”

Jesus doesn’t call us to live half-committed, partly surrendered lives. Revelation 3:16 warns about lukewarmness; God would rather us be hot or cold than stuck in the middle. We cannot cling to our old patterns and fully walk into our new purpose.

Your “hang-ups” might be unforgiveness, secret sin, fear, shame, pride, or a refusal to fully trust God with an area of your life. But in Christ, freedom is not a theory; it’s a promise. The Son sets us free through His cross, His Spirit, and His truth.

Today is not about shaming yourself for being stuck; it’s about admitting where you’re snagged and inviting Jesus to cut you loose.

Reflection:

1. Where do you feel “hung up” right now—stuck between where you are and where you know God is calling you?
2. Can you name specific hurts, habits, or hang-ups the Holy Spirit is putting His finger on?
3. Pray: “Jesus, I confess I’ve been hanging on the fence. I don’t want to be lukewarm. Cut me loose from every hang-up that keeps me from fully following You.”
