Set Apart, Not Held Back
Scripture:
“Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.”
– Hebrews 12:14 (NIV)
Devotion:
Pastor Darren shared how long he let other people’s opinions hold him back from fully following Jesus. He worried what they’d say, how they’d react, whether they’d mock him. Many of us know that tension: a stirring in our heart to go “all in” with God, and the fear of what people will think if we do.
But Hebrews 12:14 calls us to something higher: “make every effort … to be holy.” Holiness is not being rigid, mean, or religiously weird; holiness is simply being set apart for God. It is God changing our desires, priorities, and habits so that our lives look more like Jesus and less like the culture around us.
Pastor Darren pointed out something powerful: the same people who once mocked his “wild man” faith now call him when their life falls apart. They need prayer. They need hope. They need answers. The people who resisted your faith may one day need your testimony.
Holiness will make you different. It may cost you reputation, acceptance, or comfort. But holiness ultimately bears fruit that others need. Your decision to be “set apart” today could become the lifeline someone else grabs tomorrow.
Reflection:
1. Where are you letting fear of people’s opinions limit your obedience to God right now?
2. Are there specific steps God is calling you to take to be more “set apart” (in habits, relationships, speech, media, etc.)?
3. Pray: “Lord, I choose Your opinion over everyone else’s. Set me apart for You, even if it costs me. Make my life a testimony others can see.”
