The Refiner’s Fire and Launderer’s Soap
Scripture
“But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears?
For He is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ (launderer’s) soap.”
— Malachi 3:2 (NASB)
Devotion
Pastor Darren read from Malachi, right before the New Covenant breaks in. God is pictured as both a refiner and a launderer: fire that burns impurities out of metal, and soap that scrubs deep-set stains.
Holiness isn’t just about giving things up; it’s about going through God’s refining and cleansing. Fire is not comfortable. Soap can sting. But both are merciful because they remove what doesn’t belong.
God is not coming for a dirty church. He loves us enough to save us as we are—but He also loves us too much to leave us as we are. Pastor Darren reminded us: Jesus still cleans people up. The same Spirit that convicted and freed him from long‑entrenched habits is at work today in you.
The question of Malachi still stands: “Who can endure the day of His coming?” Everyone who has allowed Jesus to cleanse them and continues to submit to His refining work.

Reflection
- Where do you sense God’s “fire” right now—a situation, conviction, or pressure exposing impurities in you?
- Where do you sense His “soap”—repeated conviction over an area you keep avoiding?
- Pray honestly: “Lord, I won’t run from Your fire or Your soap. Refine and cleanse me, even if it’s uncomfortable.”
