Counting the Cost, Embracing the Call

Scripture

“And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.”
—Luke 14:27 (NKJV)

Devotion

Pastor ended with a sobering reality: following Jesus comes with a cost. Timothy, the young pastor Paul encouraged to reject fear, ultimately was beaten to death for boldly preaching against pagan idolatry, according to early church history. He didn’t just preach “no fear”—he lived it, to the point of martyrdom.

Pastor said clearly:
  • This walk “is not for the lighthearted, and it’s not for the easy, but it is for the dedicated.”
  • There will be a cost to truly following Christ.
  • Comfort, reputation, old sins, old identities—something will have to die.

But here’s the paradox: when you finally turn loose—of control, of secret sin, of double living—you don’t lose yourself; you find who you were made to be.

“I wasn’t made to be tending a grave. I was called by name, born and raised back to life again. I was made for more.”

You were not made to tend the grave of your past. You were made to carry a cross, walk with Christ, and live in resurrection power.

A sound mind is not just peaceful; it is resolved. Resolved that:
  • Jesus is worth more than comfort.
  • Obedience is worth more than image.
  • Eternity is worth more than temporary approval.

God is drawing a line in the sand—not to condemn you, but to invite you:
Will you be the one who keeps hiding, or the one who finally steps into the light and truly follows?

Reflection

1. Where have you been trying to follow Jesus *without* paying a real cost? (keeping certain sins, protecting certain reputations, withholding obedience?)
2. What is one concrete step of surrender you know God is asking for right now?
3. Pray:
“Lord Jesus, I choose to bear my cross and follow You. I lay down my right to comfort, control, and reputation. I turn loose of ______ and entrust my life to You. Give me a sound mind, a bold heart, and a life fully surrendered to Your will. I believe I was made for more—in You.”
