Love That Casts Out Fear

Scripture

“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment.”
—1 John 4:18a (NKJV)

Devotion

Paul told Timothy that the Spirit in him is not only power and a sound mind, but also love. Pastor highlighted this: fear is not just broken by power; it’s driven out by love.

Why? Because at the core of our fears are lies about love:
  • “I’m not really loved.”
  • “God will eventually give up on me.”
  • “If people knew the real me, they’d reject me.”
  • “If I obey God, He’ll take good things from me.”

This kind of thinking torments us. That’s what John is describing—fear that lives in your mind like a bully, constantly threatening you.

Perfect love—God’s love—casts that out by declaring:
  • You are fully known and fully loved in Christ. (Romans 5:8)
  • Nothing can separate you from His love. (Romans 8:38–39)
  • His plans for you are good, even when they’re costly. (Jeremiah 29:11, rightly understood)

Pastor's vision was for us to become people who love so radically that others are drawn to Jesus—even if it offends religious sensibilities. You cannot love like that while living under fear.

As you receive God’s love deeply, you grow able to:
  • Love imperfect people without constant suspicion.
  • Forgive offenses without rehearsing them.
  • Show compassion instead of judgment.

Love steadies the mind because it anchors your identity. You’re no longer scrambling to protect yourself; you’re secure in being His.

Reflection

1. Where does fear show up most in your relationships (spouse, kids, church, co-workers)?
2. Ask: What lie about God’s love or others’ love might be fueling that fear?
3. Pray: “Father, let Your perfect love cast out my fear. Show me how deeply You love me in Christ. Help me love others this week from that security, not from anxiety.”
