Not a Spirit of Fear
Scripture
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
— 2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV)
Devotion
Paul wrote to Timothy, a young pastor facing persecution, false teaching, internal church conflict, and the violent insanity of Nero. Timothy had every natural reason to be afraid.
Yet Paul doesn’t tell him, “Try harder to be brave.” He tells him who God is and what God gives:
Fear isn’t just an emotion; it becomes a spirit that shapes how we think, decide, and live. It causes us to:
Pastor named this for what it is: we are often “cowardly lions”—full of potential, full of the Spirit’s power, but cowering in the corner.
But if fear didn’t come from God, then you don’t have to treat it as part of your identity. You can resist it. You can reject its voice.

- Not a spirit of fear (or timidity)
- But a spirit of power
- And of love
- And of a sound mind
Fear isn’t just an emotion; it becomes a spirit that shapes how we think, decide, and live. It causes us to:
- Cling to control instead of surrender.
- Refuse to step into callings or ministry.
- Stay bound to “hurts, hang-ups, and habits” because we’re scared to live without them.
Pastor named this for what it is: we are often “cowardly lions”—full of potential, full of the Spirit’s power, but cowering in the corner.
But if fear didn’t come from God, then you don’t have to treat it as part of your identity. You can resist it. You can reject its voice.
The Spirit in you is:
- Power – the same power that raised Christ from the dead.
- Love – the courage to love others and yourself God’s way.
- Sound mind – clarity, stability, and the ability to renew your thoughts in God’s truth.
Reflection
- Where does fear most shape your decisions right now? (relationships, finances, calling, ministry, reputation?)
- Finish this sentence honestly: “I’m afraid that if I truly obey God in ____, then ____ will happen.”
- Pray: “Father, You did not give me a spirit of fear. I renounce fear’s authority over my mind and receive Your Spirit of power, love, and a sound mind. Help me act as if this is true today.”
