Hunger, Thirst, and Turning Loose
Scripture
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”
—Matthew 5:6 (NIV)
Devotion
Pastor Darren began with a simple but piercing call: don’t just want righteousness—hunger and thirst for it. Wanting is casual; hunger is desperate. Wanting says, “I’d like to change someday.” Hunger says, “I can’t stay like this another day.”
In the sermon, Pastor kept coming back to one issue: turning loose.
Many of us want God’s presence and the comfort of our old patterns. We want a fresh filling without a real hunger. But Jesus ties filling to hunger and thirst.
A sound mind, freedom from fear, and deep inner change don’t come to the half-interested. They come to those willing to loosen their grip on old identities, old sins, old wounds, and step, open-handed, into God’s presence.
Hunger is costly. It means admitting:
But this verse carries a promise: if you truly hunger and thirst for righteousness, *you will be filled.* God does not mock hunger. He meets it.
Reflection
1. Where are you just “wanting” righteousness instead of truly hungering for it? Be specific (purity, integrity, forgiveness, prayer, etc.).
2. What is one thing you need to *turn loose of* today to make room for God’s filling?
3. Pray honestly: “Lord, I confess I’ve often been casual. Create in me a real hunger and thirst for righteousness. I turn loose of ______ and ask You to fill me.”

- Turning loose of yesterday
- Turning loose of past hurt
- Turning loose of control

- “My way isn’t working.”
- “What I hold onto is actually starving me.”
- “I need more of God than I’ve been willing to pursue.”
But this verse carries a promise: if you truly hunger and thirst for righteousness, *you will be filled.* God does not mock hunger. He meets it.
