Your Voice Matters: Life and Death in the Tongue

Scripture

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.”
— Proverbs 18:21 (ESV)

Devotion

The sermon hit this hard: Your voice has power.

We underestimate our words. Yet Scripture declares that what comes out of our mouths can either cooperate with hell (death, division, condemnation) or with heaven (life, encouragement, truth).

Pastor Darren gave vivid examples:
  • Your tone when you walk in the door after work sets the atmosphere of your home.
  • The way you speak to your spouse or kids shapes the rest of the day.
  • How you talk about people at church either builds unity or feeds drama.

James 3 likens the tongue to a small spark that can set an entire forest ablaze (James 3:5–6). We tend to notice when others’ words hurt us, but the Spirit is asking: What fire is your own tongue lighting?

In this season of “building the bridge,” God cannot build powerfully through a people who tear each other down with their words. The enemy loves drama; God loves unity and encouragement.

Reflection

  • Think honestly about this past week:
    • Did your words mostly bring life or death?
    • Who has been most affected by your tone?
  • Is there anyone you need to apologize to or encourage because of something you said or the way you said it?
  • Pray: “Holy Spirit, take control of my tongue. Let my words today bring life, healing, and unity—not death or division.”
