Clearing Ground: One Brick at a Time

Scripture

“So I answered them and said to them, 'The God of heaven will give us success; therefore we His servants will arise and build, but you have no portion, right or memorial in Jerusalem.'”
— Nehemiah 2:20 (NASB)

Devotion

The sermon walked through a series of messages that all pointed in one direction: seeking the kingdom, rising up, building the wall “one brick at a time,” moving beyond “petty living,” breaking cycles of going in circles.

Nehemiah wasn’t a builder by trade. He was a cupbearer. But he refused to let his limitations define his obedience. He didn’t rebuild Jerusalem’s wall in a day. He obeyed one step at a time, one brick at a time.

Likewise, your spiritual life doesn’t change overnight. The “bridge” God is building in you—toward deeper maturity, courage, and mission—requires slow, faithful work in the unseen areas. Daily decisions. Hidden obedience. Small yeses.

Reading your Bible more consistently, praying with your family, repenting of old habits, re-engaging with church community—these are “bricks.” They don’t look glamorous, but they’re foundational.

Reflection

  • What are 2–3 “bricks” God has already been asking you to lay (habits, steps of faith, areas of repentance)?
  • Have you been waiting for a big emotional moment while ignoring small daily obedience?
  • Ask God: “Show me the next brick—not the whole blueprint. What is one small act of obedience You want from me today?”
