Fire, Not Just Water: The Power of the Spirit
Scripture
Luke 3:16 (KJV)
“John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire”
Acts 1:8 (ESV)
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Acts 2:4 (ESV)
“And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
Devotion
John knew his limits. He could call people to repentance and baptize them in water, but he couldn’t transform them from the inside out. That work belonged to the One coming after him—Jesus—who would baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire.
In Acts 2, that promise explodes into reality. A group of 120 believers gathered in one place, one accord, and the Spirit came like a mighty rushing wind and tongues of fire. Pastor reminds us: that’s when the voice of the church was born.
Look at Peter. Before Pentecost, he denied Jesus three times. He was impulsive, fearful, unstable. After Pentecost, his voice is bold, clear, powerful; 3,000 are saved in one day (Acts 2:41). The difference? The Holy Spirit.
Many of us are stuck at “water level”—repentant, forgiven, but operating in our own strength. We’re trying to use our natural personality, discipline, or willpower to be a witness. But Jesus never intended the church to function without the fire of the Spirit.
The Spirit is not just an experience; He is a Person who empowers you to live and speak differently:
Your voice in the wilderness needs His fire.

The Spirit is not just an experience; He is a Person who empowers you to live and speak differently:
- He gives you boldness (Acts 4:31).
- He gives words when you don’t know what to say (Luke 12:12).
- He fills your dry wilderness with living water (John 7:37–39).
- He burns away chaff (sinful patterns, dead religion) so only good fruit remains (Luke 3:17).
Your voice in the wilderness needs His fire.
Reflection
- Would you describe your walk with God as more “water only” (forgiven but weak) or “water and fire” (empowered by the Spirit)? Why?
- Where do you most need the Spirit’s power right now: boldness, purity, wisdom, or endurance?
- Pray sincerely: “Jesus, You are the Baptizer in the Holy Spirit. I surrender to You. Fill me afresh with Your Spirit and Your fire. Empower my voice to be a true witness.”
