Your Voice in a Barren Place

Scripture

Luke 3:3–4 (KJV)
“And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins; as it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, Make his paths straight.”

Proverbs 18:21 (NIV)
“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

Devotion

Pastor describes John preaching in a literal wilderness—barren land, isolated, unproductive. He then connects that to “wilderness locations” in our communities and in our culture: places and people where Christ’s name is only a fable, where sin is normalized, where spiritual life is “barren.”

But the wilderness is exactly where God raised a voice.

John’s surroundings didn’t match his message. He wasn’t standing in a thriving city where everyone was already seeking God. He went where people were far from God, where religion had withdrawn. And there he opened his mouth.

You may feel like your environment is spiritually barren—a workplace hostile to faith, a family that mocks your convictions, a friend group that doesn’t care about God, a community known more for addiction than devotion. That’s not a sign that you’re in the wrong place; it may be evidence you’re in your Jordan wilderness.

Your voice carries power. According to Proverbs 18:21, your tongue will bear fruit: life or death. Silence in a barren place only guarantees more barrenness. But a simple, faithful voice—praying, blessing, testifying, sharing the gospel, speaking love and truth—plants seeds that the Holy Spirit can water with fire.

Pastor Darren asks, “Where has your voice been lately?” Caught in negativity? Complaining? Or declaring life, hope, and repentance in the wilderness God has placed you in?

Reflection

  • What is the “wilderness” around you right now—where spiritual life seems barren? Name it.
  • How have you been using your voice in that place: to complain, to stay silent, or to speak life?
  • Ask God: “Show me one person or place this week where I need to be a ‘voice crying in the wilderness.’ Give me boldness and words.”
