The Shelter of the Most High: Finding “The Place”

Scripture

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say to the LORD, ‘My refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.’”
— Psalm 91:1–2 (ESV)

Devotion

Pastor Darren kept returning to this idea: the place.
We all live in a “place” spiritually, mentally, and emotionally—places of fear, busyness, distraction, or compromise. But Psalm 91 invites us into another place: the shelter of the Most High, the secret place of the Almighty.

“Dwells” and “abide” are not quick drive‑through words. They describe living somewhere—hanging your hat there, making it your address. Many of us have “mailboxes” in places of anxiety, sin, or self‑reliance. Pastor said, “Where you're getting mail don't always make that going to be your ending place.”

God is inviting you to change your address.
The secret place isn’t religious performance; it’s relational presence. It’s where God covers, protects, and speaks. You don’t earn your way in; Jesus opened the door. But you must choose to go there—regularly, deliberately, and honestly.

The circumstances of your life may not change overnight, but the place you live from can change today.

Reflection

  • Be honest: where have you been “living” lately—fear, anger, distraction, lust, performance, people‑pleasing?
  • What usually keeps you from slowing down and entering the “secret place” with God?
  • If you could describe the “place” you want to live in with God using three words, what would they be?

Prayer

Father,
I confess I have been dwelling in lesser places—places of worry, sin, and self‑reliance. Today I acknowledge that You are my refuge and fortress. Draw me into Your shelter. Teach me to abide in Your shadow, not just visit occasionally. I renounce every false place I’ve made my home, and I ask You to become my true dwelling. Let this week mark a shift in where I “live” on the inside.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
