Leaving the Water Pot
Scripture
“The woman then left her waterpot, went her way into the city, and said to the men, ‘Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?’”
— John 4:28–29 (NKJV)
Devotion
This small detail is powerful: she left her water pot. The very thing she had come for—water—suddenly became secondary. Once she encountered Jesus and tasted living water, the old container wasn’t big enough for what God was now doing in her. She had something better to carry back to the city.
When you truly encounter Jesus, some things you once clung to become less important. Old identities, sinful patterns, outdated habits, even good things that were never meant to be ultimate—all become “water pots” you can set down. Your priority shifts from “What do I need?” to “Who needs to meet Him?”
She ran back into town, not as a theologian, but as a witness: “Come see a man…”
Reflection
Prayer
Jesus, show me the water pots I’m still clinging to. Give me the courage to set them down so I can run with what You’ve put in me. Make me bold to share, even if I don’t have all the answers. Let my life say, “Come see a Man who changed me.” Use me to draw others to You. In Your name, amen.

Reflection
- What “water pots” might Jesus be asking you to leave—old identities (victim, failure), addictions, unhealthy relationships, religious performance, people-pleasing?
- What would it practically look like for you to “run into your city” (home, workplace, friend circle) and simply say, “Come see a man…”?
Prayer
