Don’t Stall on the Hill

Scripture

“Why are you crying out to Me? Tell the sons of Israel to go forward.”
– Exodus 14:15 (NASB)

Devotion

In the sermon, there was a vivid picture: the stick-shift on a steep hill, the moment you can either move or stall. Spiritually, we hit those hills all the time—crisis, pressure, disappointment, fear. The Israelites hit a massive hill moment at the Red Sea. Enemy behind; impossible obstacle ahead.

God’s response to Moses is surprising: “Why are you crying out to Me? Tell the people to go forward.” He wasn’t saying, “Stop praying,” but He was saying, “Don’t confuse prayer with paralysis.” There is a time to cry out, and there is a time to move your feet in obedience while you trust God to part what you cannot.

Many of us spiritually “stall on the hill”: we stop moving, slam on the brakes, spin our wheels, or slide backward. Sometimes we even make it worse—like that SUV burning rubber on the icy road. The problem wasn’t that they tried to move; it was how they tried—panicking, not listening, overreacting.

God calls you to keep moving forward—step by step—in obedience, even when you can’t yet see how He will make a way. Moving forward might be as simple as: apologize, forgive, show up, worship, open your Bible, ask for help, serve someone, or simply tell God “yes” again.

Reflection

  • Where do you feel “stuck on the hill” right now—afraid to move forward, afraid to go back?
  • Is there a clear step of obedience you already know you should take, but keep delaying?
  • How might God’s word to Moses apply to you today: “Tell the people to go forward”?

Prayer

Lord, I don’t want to stall on the hill. Show me where fear, confusion, or comfort is keeping me from moving in obedience. Give me courage to take the next step You’re asking of me, even if I don’t see the whole path yet. As I move forward by faith, would You do what only You can do? In Jesus’ name, amen.
