Seeking His Face, Not Just His Hand

Scripture

1 Chronicles 16:10–11 (ESV) “Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice! Seek the LORD and his strength; seek his presence continually!”

Devotion

Pastor Darren said his question from the Lord was simple but heavy: “Are they still seeking Jesus?” Not: Are they still seeking blessings, help, or a better life—but Jesus Himself.

1 Chronicles calls us to seek the Lord, His strength, and His presence continually. This is relational language. Seeking His face means pursuing who He is, not only what He can do. And yet, the pastor noted how easily we drift into just wanting enough Jesus to “make it” instead of wanting all of Him.

In seasons of wandering, we often seek relief more than relationship, solutions more than His presence. But the more we truly seek Him, the more His strength, joy, and power naturally flow in our lives. Seekers aren’t satisfied with stories of what God used to do—they want to know what He is doing right now.

God is not calling you to a life of religious maintenance; He’s inviting you into an ongoing, living pursuit—seeking His face, His strength, and His presence, not just His gifts.

Reflection

  • When you pray, what do you usually seek most—God’s presence or His help?
  • Have you grown content with memories of what God used to do in your life?
  • What is one way you can practically “seek His presence continually” today?

Prayer

Father,
I confess that many times I’ve sought Your hand more than Your face. I’ve wanted Your blessings more than Your presence. Change my desires. Teach me to seek You—for who You are, not just what You can do for me. Let my heart rejoice as I seek Your strength and Your presence continually. Draw me deeper into real relationship with You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
