Are You Seeking or Just Showing Up?
This weeks devotions are based on the sermon from September 7 2025. It is available to watch on the Restoration app and on YouTube if you'd like to rewatch the sermon first.
Are You Seeking of Just Showing Up?
Scripture
Matthew 7:7 (ESV) “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.”
Devotion
In the sermon, the Pastor Darren draws a sharp line between *seeking* and *wandering*. Many people faithfully show up to church, but leave with “the same monkey on their back” that they walked in with. Attendance isn’t the same as pursuit.
Jesus’ words in Matthew 7:7 are active, not passive: *ask, seek, knock.* These are verbs of pursuit, not casual interest. The promise that follows—*you will find*—is for those who actually *seek*. Pastor pointed out that sometimes we dress like church people, sit in our 18-inch seats, and hide behind masks, while our hearts are wandering far from God.
Seeking Jesus is not about perfection; it’s about direction. Are you moving toward Him or drifting away? Are you content with a weekly church experience, or is there a hunger in you that says, “Sunday is not enough—I need Him every day”?
If you realize you’ve settled for “just enough Jesus to get in,” it’s not to shame you; it’s to awaken you. God is not hiding from you. He is inviting you: *Ask. Seek. Knock.*
Reflection
- Honestly, would you describe your relationship with Jesus right now as “seeking” or “wandering”? Why?
- What habits in your life show that you are actively seeking Him (or not)?
- What would “seeking Jesus” look like *this week* in a practical way for you?
Prayer
Lord Jesus,
I don’t want to just show up; I want to truly seek You. Expose where I’ve slipped into wandering, comfort, or religious routine. Stir a holy hunger in me—one that will not be satisfied with a once-a-week encounter. Teach me to ask, to seek, and to knock with faith and persistence. Today I choose to turn my heart toward You again. Meet me as I draw near.
In Your mighty name, Amen.
